As Nebraskans, we care about our neighbors. Last Friday, Governor Pillen signed an executive order that directs Nebraska agencies to comply with the federal government’s harsh and unproductive immigration enforcement orders. This executive order focused on contributing to sweeping enforcement actions is deeply contrary to Nebraska’s values of family and community, dignity and fairness.
Nebraskans across the state have stood with immigrant and refugee neighbors for years as all sectors of our communities have called for our immigration laws to be updated. Harsh enforcement of immigration laws that are 40 years out of date harms everyday working Nebraskans, local families, and whole communities.
Now is an important time to contact your state senator while they are at work in the Legislature during our current session. For the many state conversations that will take place in the coming weeks, make sure your senator knows you are concerned about immigrant friends, neighbors, and coworkers, and that you don’t support harsh enforcement of outdated laws harming everyday working people. The Legislature has the power to direct how our state’s resources are funded and utilized.
Tell your state senator that you do not want our state and local community safety resources to be used in any way that would tear apart families and communities across our state. Tell them to stand with moms, dads, friends, and coworkers whose important work supports local health care, education, restaurants, agriculture, construction, and many other systems and services.
Our voices are needed more than ever to ensure that our state remains a welcoming place for all who call it home. After you contact your state senator, if you haven’t already, take another minute to contact your members of Congress as well!
Thank you for your continued advocacy!
