Legislative Update

At the Capitol: Two Priority Bills Up For Debate

We are on Day 62, which means we’re now two-thirds of the way through the 2025 session. The Legislature will continue all-day floor debate until they adjourn in early June. Learn more about the floor debate process in our latest At The Core video.

This week, two of Appleseed’s 2025 priority bills are up for select file debate:

Our state is stronger when every Nebraskan has the food they need.

LB192 (Sen. Dan Quick) preserves access to food for thousands of Nebraska families by maintaining the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)’s income eligibility level, which will decrease in October unless the legislature acts now.

This bill would:

  • Maintain Nebraska’s current SNAP income eligibility level (which would go down significantly this October without action);
  • Continue to reduce the SNAP benefits cliff, which happens when people take a small raise at work and lose a disproportionate amount of benefits; and
  • Not force 10,000 Nebraskans off of SNAP benefits if the income level is allowed to go down.

Maintaining our SNAP eligibility level would cost the state nothing! Continuing this program just makes sense and we need you to make sure your senator knows it. Contact your senator and tell them to SUPPORT LB192!

For everyone to have access to the good life, we must ensure that Nebraska workers are paid a living wage. That’s why the minimum wage increase passed overwhelmingly on the ballot in 2022 — and why we must now all fight to protect it.

LB258 (Sen. Jane Raybould) would harm workers by severely weakening Nebraska’s minimum wage law through carving out a subminimum wage for workers under the age of 20 AND restricting the cost of living increases that Nebraskans voted for.

This bill undermines changes that were overwhelmingly approved by Nebraska voters, and it will all but ensure that Nebraska wages once again fall behind cost of living increases. Contact your senator and tell them to OPPOSE LB258!

Become a monthly Sustaining Supporter and provide critical flexibility all year long. While it may seem small, even gifts of $5 and $10 a month add up to make a long-term impact, especially during these challenging times.

Thank you for fighting for justice and opportunity for ALL Nebraskans!
