Nebraska Appleseed Statement on Graham-Cassidy CBO score

Analysis reveals bill would gut Medicaid, endanger coverage for millions of Americans

LINCOLN — Monday evening, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its analysis of the Graham-Cassidy Senate health care bill, confirming the bill would have devastating effects on the U.S. health care system.

This morning, Nebraska Appleseed Deputy Health Care Director Molly McCleery issued the following statement on the analysis:

“The CBO score confirms what has long been apparent, that the Graham-Cassidy bill is the most extreme and dangerous health care plan Congress has proposed yet,” McCleery said. “The bill would devastate Medicaid, slashing $1 trillion through 2026, which would be a fatal blow to the health coverage of Nebraska’s most-vulnerable children, seniors, and people with disabilities. The CBO analysis also concluded the bill’s removal of protections for people with preexisting conditions would result in many older adults and people who live with health challenges being unable to achieve the quality, affordable insurance they need.

“We implore Nebraska’s members of Congress to step away from this rushed, irresponsible attempt to pass this bill, which would result in millions of Americans, including many here in Nebraska, losing coverage. We encourage our Senators to resume bipartisan discussions that include input from health care experts, stakeholders, and patients to strengthen our health care system so that it can work for every Nebraska family.”
