Legislative Update

At the Capitol: Debate – and Filibusters – Continue

Last week the Legislature began all-day floor debate, including late-night sessions, which is expected to continue until session adjourns in June.

ICYMI: Click here for an update on what we’ll be fighting for – and against – for the rest of this legislative session.

Last week’s highlights

There were a lot of filibusters throughout last week’s debates on income and property taxes, creating an office of broadband services, and changing concealed carry gun laws. We anticipate that filibusters on upcoming bills will continue.

Last week’s floor debate on LB754 to reduce corporate and individual income tax rates highlighted the importance of bills like LB294 (Sen. Danielle Conrad) – one of Appleseed’s 2023 priority bills – which would help families fight the cost of living by adopting the Child Tax Credit Act (CTC). The CTC proposal would provide a tax credit of $1,000 per child for Nebraska taxpayers in middle and low-income households. We’re also supportive of an increase to Nebraska’s earned income tax credit, which would also benefit low-income working families.

Although neither of these changes have been added to LB754 yet, we hope senators will consider these two important poverty-reducing measures as the negotiations on changing our state’s tax code continue.

This week

This week the Legislature will continue with debate, including more late nights, before recessing for a long weekend on Friday. We’ll keep you updated as our priority bills move forward for debate.

In the meantime, you can take action now by sending an email to senators in the Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee on why they should SUPPORT LB84 (Sen. Jen Day). LB84 helps Nebraskans keep food on their tables by maintaining a 2021 change that fixes the SNAP “cliff effect” and helps more families get food assistance.

Very simply, it makes it so that Nebraskans participating in SNAP no longer have to turn down economic opportunities to continue feeding their families. Nebraska should reward work, not discourage it. Click here to help our neighbors keep food on the table by telling the HHS Committee to support LB84.
