Take Action: LB952 ensures health care coverage for a safe, successful reentry

\"Medicaid\"

Our communities are stronger when Nebraskans have access to quality, affordable health care. We can do more to make sure Nebraskans have access to health care when leaving incarceration so they can safely and successfully return to their community. LB952, introduced by Senator John Cavanaugh, would provide Medicaid enrollment assistance to reentering Nebraskans.

The first few weeks after reentry is a crucial time, and ensuring individuals can access health care is essential. Individuals leaving correctional facilities are more likely to have high medical needs and few connections to health care providers and support.

Many Nebraskans leaving incarceration are now eligible for health insurance coverage thanks to Medicaid expansion, but many may not be enrolled in Medicaid when reentering. Medicaid provides health coverage to help folks get prescriptions they need, manage chronic health conditions, and access behavioral health services like therapy. Requiring Medicaid enrollment assistance prior to release will help Nebraskans connect to the care they need to be healthy and successful at reentry.
