Appleseed Statement on Governor’s veto of DREAMers driver’s license bill

Veto unnecessarily harms young Nebraskans who want to contribute more fully to their communities

LINCOLN — Wednesday night, Nebraska Appleseed Immigrants & Communities Director Darcy Tromanhauser issued the following statement on Governor Ricketts’s veto of LB 623.

“We are gravely disappointed in Governor Ricketts’s choice to harm young Nebraskans – and Nebraska communities – with his veto of LB 623 tonight,” Tromanhauser said. “The hard-working, talented young people who can apply for driver’s licenses under the bill have lived in Nebraska most of their lives and would be able to contribute more fully to their communities if the bill became law.

“This veto disregards the statewide show of support for the bill that includes business, faith, and community leaders as well as the overwhelming majority of the Legislature. We urge State Senators to show their support for the bill once again by voting to override the Governor’s veto so Nebraska can take the long-overdue step of issuing driver’s licenses to talented young people who want to contribute more to their communities.”
