Legislative Update

At the Capitol: LB89 up for debate TODAY

We are on Day 65 of the 2025 session and late nights officially start today. Here’s an update on how we’ll continue fighting for justice and opportunity for ALL Nebraskans as we head into the last 30 days of the 2025 Legislative Session.

There are two bills up for debate this week that we’re watching. You can learn more about the floor debate process in our latest At The Core video and stream legislative floor debate on Nebraska Public Media.

Our state is stronger when every Nebraskan has the food they need. ✅ LB192 (Senator Dan Quick) preserves access to food for thousands of Nebraska families by maintaining the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)’s income eligibility level, which will decrease in October unless the legislature acts now. Maintaining our SNAP eligibility level would cost the state nothing! Continuing this program just makes sense, and we need you to make sure your senator knows it. Contact your senator and tell them to SUPPORT LB192!

Trans Nebraskans deserve access to the same school activities and facilities as other Nebraskans. Denying them this access sends a clear message that they don’t belong, and will only harm their ability to thrive in the long-term. LB89 (Senator Kathleen Kauth) is an expansion of the school bathroom and sports bill that was defeated last year and would create definitions of “male” and “female” that K-12 schools, postsecondary institutions, and ALL state agencies would be required to follow. This bill won’t protect anyone. We know there is no room for discrimination in our state – and now your senator needs to hear it from you. Contact your senator and tell them to OPPOSE LB89!

Join us on Thursday, April 24th at the Nebraska State Capitol for The People’s Day! Drop in anytime between 10:00 am and 7:00 pm CT to be the face of the real people impacted by policy decisions. Volunteers from civic organizations will be there to help walk with you as you talk to Senators, visit their offices, and speak up for you and your community. Whether it’s 30 minutes or all day, please join us for what works for your schedule. No matter how long or when, our legislators need to see the people in the people’s house. Let’s remind them that we are here, we are paying attention, and we care.

The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Nebraska in collaboration with other Nebraska organizations. Registration is not required but greatly appreciated. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Rachel Gibson at rachel@lwvnebraska.org

Become a monthly Sustaining Supporter and provide critical flexibility all year long. While it may seem small, even gifts of $5 and $10 a month add up to make a long-term impact, especially during these challenging times.

Thank you for your continued advocacy.
