Legislative Update

Special Legislative Session expected to begin this Thursday

It is anticipated that on Thursday, Governor Pillen will call a special legislative session to drastically change tax policy in Nebraska.

We are concerned about the details outlined in the Governor’s proposed plan. The plan calls for 120+ new taxes on everyday goods and services, which would create a massive, unfair tax shift that will disproportionately impact hardworking, everyday Nebraskans – particularly individuals and families trying to survive on lower or fixed incomes.

The Governor’s plan also indicates that it will include hundreds of millions in cuts to our state’s budget – which would significantly impact communities throughout our state.

To be clear: There is no reason that the Legislature must convene this summer regarding property taxes. There is no immediate crisis to be solved. Decisions that fundamentally alter tax policy and cut critical programs for those most vulnerable in our state should not be made so quickly.

Hardworking Nebraskans deserve more than a few weeks of the Legislature’s time to consider a tax proposal that shifts the financial burden of funding our state to middle- and low-income families.

Contact your senator and ask them to OPPOSE the Governor’s plan to increase taxes on hardworking Nebraska families.
