Applications Are Open! Join Appleseed’s 2023-24 Food Access Community Advocates Cohort

Are you passionate about making change in your community?

Nebraska Appleseed’s food access team has just launched applications for our 9-month Food Access Community Advocates Cohort! If you have ever struggled to put food on the table, this is a paid opportunity to build your personal storytelling and advocacy skills. No former advocacy experience is necessary.

Applications are live through August 20, 2022.

What will I learn in this cohort?

  1. How to tell your story. Your experience is powerful. We’ll spend time talking through sharing important details that can have an impact.
  2. How to engage with the media. We’ll go over ways to work with reporters to advocate for the issues you care about.
  3. How to make change. You will learn more about the different systems of power in our state, how to engage local and state politicians and put pressure on issues that can make positive changes for Nebraskans.
  4. How to grow the movement. We’ll also work with you to brainstorm ideas and share our own tips and tricks for ways to engage your fellow community members on issues that matter.

What should I expect from the cohort?

  • Monthly trainings: Cohort members will spend 4hrs/month for 9 months participating in different cohort trainings and activities. This includes monthly trainings and independent work time.
  • Compensation and financial support: Members will be compensated $20/hr for the 4hrs/month of time they engage and additional assistance with childcare/transportation costs will be provided as needed.
  • A hybrid format: with 2 in-person retreats but other meetings held virtually to accommodate peoples’ schedules.

We are specifically looking for community members personally struggling to access sufficient food (e.g., if you are lifetime banned from SNAP due to a drug conviction, if you have had to choose between a raise at work and keeping SNAP benefits, if your family uses free/reduced price school meals, etc.). BIPOC and other marginalized identities are highly encouraged to apply! Following the application period, we will follow up to schedule short interviews to learn more about you and your story.

Questions? Email mhamann@neappleseed.org and apply by Sunday, August 20, 2023!

We look forward to hearing from you!
