At the Capitol: strengthening health care access and worker protections

\"Unicameral\"The Legislature began all day floor debate this week, starting with 2022 priority legislation. Senators will continue introducing new bills through Thursday, January 20th. Next week, floor debate will shift to the mornings only while hearings take over the Legislature’s afternoons through the end of February.

In our previous legislative update, we shared a few important updates to how you can share your voice on legislation that’s important to you. More information about these options can be found here

Last week’s highlights

A number of bills were introduced last week, including a few Appleseed 2022 priority bills:

  • LB719, introduced by Senator Adam Morfeld, strengthens Nebraska’s workers’ compensation program and better supports those recovering from on-the-job injuries.
  • LB857, introduced by Senator Jen Day, streamlines access to Medicaid programs for kids in communities across Nebraska.
  • LB871, introduced by Senator Matt Hansen, updates existing law to increase transparency in meatpacking plants and the accessibility of translation resources in large businesses.
  • LB932, introduced by Senator Megan Hunt, creates much needed transparency for youth in foster care who are eligible for social security benefits.
  • LB952, introduced by Senator John Cavanaugh, requires Medicaid enrollment assistance prior to an individual’s release from Nebraska’s correctional facilities to help connect Nebraskans with the health care they need to be healthy and successful at reentry.

We anticipate several more of Appleseed’s priority bills to be introduced this week and next. Stay tuned for further updates!
