The Affordable Care Act Withstands Legal Challenge

Lincoln, NE — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled to preserve the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Nebraska Appleseed’s Senior Director of Programs, James Goddard, issued the following statement:

“Today’s decision from the United States Supreme Court is a huge victory. At stake was the health coverage of 23 million Americans, including the nearly 90,000 Nebraskans enrolled in coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace and another 90,000 eligible for Medicaid expansion. The decision protects the coverage of the 26% of Nebraskans (295,000) who have a preexisting condition.

The ACA has allowed millions of Americans to stay covered during the deadliest public health crisis in a century. We must build on the ACA, ensuring that all Americans are covered and that coverage is affordable and equitable. Now is the time for our state Department of Health and Human Services to fully implement Medicaid expansion, without a tiered benefits system, without any more delay.”
