Essential worker safety and support legislation hits the floor

UnicameralThere are only 14 days left for this session, so we are nearing the end of floor debate for legislative priority bills. The Speaker announced last week that the session would end early, but the precise date is still unknown and depends on how swiftly the body moves through the remaining agenda.

Meatpacking worker protections advance to select file

Last week, LB241, the Meatpacking Employees COVID-19 Protection Act, moved to select file! Introduced and prioritized by Senator Tony Vargas, 27 senators voted to support this important legislation, which protects Nebraska’s meatpacking workers with common sense and critical COVID-19 protections: 6-foot distancing, sufficient masks, effective screening and quarantine practices, and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance. There is still work to be done, so please take a moment to email and thank your senator for supporting LB 241, or urge their support on the next vote.

Paid sick and safe leave legislation stalls

Unfortunately, LB258, introduced by Senator Tony Vargas and prioritized by Senator Matt Hansen, did not advance past general file on Monday night. This legislation would have ensured that Nebraskans have access to basic, earned paid sick leave – promoting healthier and stronger families, especially working parents with young children.

Access to basic paid sick leave consistently emerges as a priority for Nebraskans working essential jobs across our state, including family members and neighbors working in meatpacking. It is all too common for Nebraskans not to have access to even one paid sick day to go to the doctor or care for a sick child. We will continue to push for this type of legislation in the future.
