With only 13 days left in the 2015 Nebraska Legislative session, time is winding down. Here’s your weekly Legislative Update.
Compromise reached on bill to increase aid to working families
It appears Nebraska’s poorest working families may get a measure of help via a compromise announced May 5 to slightly increase payments in the Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) program.
ADC, a vital work support to ensure low-income families with children can provide their basic needs, has not been raised in nearly 30 years. The Governor vetoed a bill (LB 89) that would have increased the ADC payment, but many aspects of LB 89 now will be included as an amendment (AM 1551) on LB 607.
LB 607 is scheduled for General File debate Tuesday. We encourage the Legislature to quickly pass LB 607 with AM 1551 and the Governor to sign it without delay so Nebraska’s hard-working families can get ahead and provide for their children.
LB 81 – This bill would strengthen Nebraska’s child care subsidy program, a critical work support for working families with low incomes, and reduce the harmful “cliff effect.” It is scheduled for Select File debate on Tuesday.
Oppose bill to cut wages of hard-working students
LB 599 – This bill would allow employers to pay high school student workers less than other employees, which is in direct contrast to the results of November’s election when Nebraskans voted to raise the minimum wage. LB 599 is likely to come up for a Final Reading vote this week.
We oppose this bill because it could encourage students to drop out of school in order to earn more money for their families. Contact your State Senator and tell them to vote “NO” on LB 599 because hard-working young Nebraskans should not face wage discrimination.
DREAMers driver’s license bill could be schedule this week
LB 623 – A bill that would allow young immigrant Nebraskans known as “DREAMers” to apply for driver’s licenses, may be schedule for General File debate this week.
The bill has gained statewide support over the last few weeks. We urge you to contact your State Senator and encourage them to cast a “Yes” vote for LB 623 so these young Nebraskans can contribute more fully to their communities.
Other priority bills
LB 294 – Would increase penalties for human trafficking and protect trafficking victims from being charged in juvenile court. LB 294 was advanced to Final Reading on May 5.
LB 566 – Will strengthen and clarify aspects of Nebraska’s Indian Child Welfare Act and help maintain ties of culture and tradition that are essential to the well-being of native children and families. LB 566 was advanced to Final Reading on May 5.
