Working families are the engine of our economy. We know that ALL Nebraskans should be able to earn paid sick leave, regardless of age and where they work. Basic paid sick leave also keeps businesses and communities healthy. That’s why nearly 75% of Nebraskans supported paid sick leave at the ballot box in November 2024.
On Monday, February 9, the Business and Labor Committee will hold hearings on two important bills that impact Nebraska’s voter-approved paid sick leave law:
- ✅ LB1089 (Sen. Jana Hughes) protects Nebraska workers by ensuring that employees can pursue legal action if their employer violates their rights under our current paid sick leave law. This bill reinstates the private right of action that the legislature removed from the voter-approved paid sick leave law last year.
- ❌ LB1249 (Sen. Tony Sorrentino) harms workers by removing paid sick leave protections from yet another group of working Nebraskans, including employees of private educational institutions and employees who have any amount of an ownership interest in their employer.
All Nebraskans need time to care for themselves or a family member. Passing Initiative 436 was a HUGE step forward in support of hardworking Nebraskans, families, businesses, and communities in our state. The Legislature already removed paid sick leave protections from 140,000 Nebraskans in 2025. We must continue to fight to protect our paid sick leave law passed by an overwhelming majority of Nebraska voters.
