A recent Health Affairs blog post discusses possible implications for the Supreme Court decision on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Each of the Court’s possible rulings was given a Richter Scale rating based on how great a “ground shift” it would cause.

The Richter Scale is a great shorthand for understanding how big of an impact each potential outcome might have on states depending on where the state is in the implementation process. It is also a good metaphor for the impact the case can have on the lives of those that are already benefiting or will benefit from the ACA.
The Supreme Court decision is expected to be released later this month, and we’ll know how big of a “shake up” is in store for health care reform then.
