Kids Crusin’ Kitchen Food Truck Visits Capitol

nutritionThe “Kids Crusin’ Kitchen” mobile summer food truck visited the Nebraska State Capitol today to draw attention to childhood hunger problems and solutions.  The truck, operated by the Food Bank for the Heartland, The Salvation Army, and Hunger Free Heartland, serves meals to children in low-income communities during the summer.

“One in six children in Nebraska struggles with hunger,” explains Rebecca Gould, Executive Director of Nebraska Appleseed, “The Kids Crusin’ Kitchen food truck brings free meals to hungry kids through the federally funded Summer Food Service Program.  As summer is almost upon us, we wanted to draw attention to the importance of providing healthy, nutritious food to kids.”

State Senator Norm Wallman has brought a bill, LB 1090, that would provide more resources for infrastructure for summer food distribution.  “Public private partnerships like the Kids Crusin’ Kitchen are great solutions to the problem of child hunger in the summer time.  I’m proud to support efforts to provide children with healthy meals.”

State Senators received a sample summer meal provided by Nebraska Appleseed along with a fact sheet about child nutrition programs.
