Call to action

TAKE ACTION: Speak up for Nebraska families and children!

Every Nebraskan should have the resources and opportunities needed to thrive.

During a time of increasing costs for everything from food to housing, it’s more urgent than ever that we give Nebraska’s lowest income families with children a fighting chance to live the good life.

TOMORROW, Thursday, February 5, the Health and Human Services Committee will hold a hearing on ❌ LB926 (Sen. Bob Andersen). This bill would harm Nebraska’s most vulnerable families and children by making drastic changes to our state’s Aid to Dependent Children (ADC) program, which provides direct cash assistance to Nebraska’s lowest income families with children.

LB926 would create additional hardships for families who need our support the most by:

  • Reducing the lifetime limit for Nebraska’s ADC program from 5 years to 3 years;
  • Removing access to transitional benefits like child care assistance and health coverage;
  • Eliminating language allowing the Department to extend a self-sufficiency contract and continue providing ADC assistance when jobs are not available;
  • Striking language that authorizes the Department to utilize hardship waivers; and
  • Imposing unnecessarily harsh child support enforcement requirements on grandparents.

A growing body of research has shown that direct cash assistance has an immediate and long-lasting positive impact for families, by enabling families to better access resources and address their own basic needs. We all have a vested interest in the kids in our communities having a fighting chance in Nebraska. That’s why it’s so critical that we protect access to programs like ADC.
