ADVISORY: Community members call for permanent protections for immigrant Nebraskans at April 18 Press Conference

Nebraskans urge congressional delegation to pass new positive immigration legislation to create stability for Nebraska families and communities

LINCOLN — On Thursday, April 18, Dreamer Nebraskans and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) residents – supported by statewide community organizations – will host a press conference urging long-overdue, positive legislation that creates a process for longtime community members to apply for citizenship. While members of Congress are home for recess, community members and leaders will call for Nebraska’s delegation to pass the Dream and Promise Act of 2019 in the U.S. House and companion legislation in the U.S. Senate (Dream Act of 2019 and Secure Act of 2019).

What: Press conference with Nebraska Dreamers, TPS residents, and community supporters

Where: Nebraska State Capitol Rotunda, Lincoln, Neb.

When: Thursday, April 18, 12:15 pm (Central)

Speakers expected to include:

  • Yovana Aliaga Centon, Lincoln resident and Dreamer Nebraskan
  • Jose Palacios, longtime Lincoln resident with Temporary Protected Status
  • Frida Aguilera, UNL student

Community members are also delivering letters of support for the legislation to Nebraska’s members of Congress during recess this week.

Versions of the Dream Act have been pending in Congress since 2001. Dreamers continue to contribute to and enrich Nebraska communities while living with constant uncertainty after the Trump Administration canceled the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program one year ago. A majority of TPS residents have been living in the U.S. for more than 20 years, building lives, families, and businesses. Similarly, the Administration announced a sudden end to TPS status for residents from several countries where conflict or other extraordinary circumstances make it impossible to return without jeopardizing their lives.
