CBO score confirms House health care bill devastating for Nebraska
AHCA would make health care unaffordable for millions more Americans
LINCOLN — Wednesday, Nebraska Appleseed Deputy Health Care Director Molly McCleery issued the following statement on the Congressional Budget Office scoring of the American Health Care Act, released this afternoon.
“The nonpartisan CBO score confirms what we’ve long feared, that the American Health Care Act would have wide-reaching, damaging effects by taking health coverage from at least 23 million Americans and effectively doubling the uninsured rate over the next 10 years,” McCleery said. “The analysis also reinforces just how misguided it was for the House to vote on this bill before learning its effects. Coming just a day after the President’s budget proposed additional drastic cuts to Medicaid and children’s health coverage, the CBO study highlights how much damage Congress could do the health care of hundreds of thousands of Nebraskans including children, people with low incomes, people who have preexisting conditions, and Nebraskans with disabilities.
“The Senate is now the last chance to save health coverage for Nebraskans who are at risk of being left uninsured by the AHCA. We urge our Senators to allow every Nebraskan to afford the coverage they need by building on the life-saving protections of the Affordable Care Act, not stripping them away. As the most prosperous country in the world, it would be beneath the U.S. to leave any American unable to get high-quality health care.”
