Nebraska Appleseed statement on BRIDGE Act
U.S. Senate bill a welcome, but temporary solution for hard-working young Nebraskans
On Friday, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (Illinois) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (South Carolina) introduced the “Bar Removal of Immigrants who Dream and Grow the Economy,” or “BRIDGE Act” (S. 1589), bipartisan legislation intended to protect young people under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program by allowing recipients to continue to live, work, and go to school in the only country they know as home.
Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Rebecca Gould released the following statement on the BRIDGE Act.
“This bipartisan legislation would help support strong Nebraska families and recognizes the valuable contributions DACA youth have made to their local communities and economies,” Gould said. “As a program that has widespread support in Nebraska, DACA has given young immigrant Nebraskans the opportunity to pursue their educational and professional goals, and to increase their participation in their communities.
“While we look forward to working with members of Congress to pass this vital legislation, we also hope Congress comes together to adopt more-permanent, commonsense immigration laws that reflect our values and keeps DACA youth and their families together.”
