Nebraska schools just got a powerful new resource to better offer a healthy school breakfast to the kids who need it most.
The Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom (PBIC) program recently launched in Nebraska. This consortium of national and local partners, including Nebraska Appleseed, can offer technical assistance as well as financial support to let schools make sure their students get a good meal to start the day through breakfast in the classroom programs.
Students who are hungry make more trips to the nurse’s office, are absent more often, and have more trouble learning and paying attention in class. Studies have shown, however, that students who eat breakfast are more likely to perform better academically and behaviorally. The breakfast in the classroom model, along with universal free breakfast, has proven that when all students are offered breakfast in a communal atmosphere, it benefits both the school and the student.
Schools with a high rate of students who receive free and reduced-price lunches may be eligible for PBIC. Approximately 60 Nebraska schools are eligible.
