LINCOLN — Today, Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Becky Gould issued the following statement on the proposed voter ID bills LB 111 and LB 121 heard by the Legislature’s Government, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee this afternoon.

“LB 111 and LB 121 are unnecessary and restrictive barriers to the democratic process that will undermine the fundamental right to vote for many eligible Nebraska voters,” Gould said. “Despite the lack of evidence of any problem with voter fraud, these voter suppression bills would impose a costly new bureaucracy on Nebraska counties. These bills will make it harder for people with low incomes, seniors, students, and people in our rural areas to participate in our elections. Voting is an American right – and making voting harder is not a Nebraska value.

“We urge the committee not to advance these harmful bills to the floor of the Legislature.”
