Congress has the opportunity to pass meaningful and long-awaited reforms that would make a real difference in the lives of Nebraskans. The new House Build Back Better legislation is a historic step forward that can bring real change by reducing poverty and lessening racial disparities. We need your advocacy to let our members of Congress know we support this legislation.
The Build Back Better legislation is an important step forward in supporting families and extending some essential benefits that were made available during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The reality is that the barriers our communities faced during this time were not new for many and are still felt. We can take a step in the right direction of bringing equitable and inclusive solutions to these long felt hardships.
In the coming days, the House will vote first on the Build Back Better legislation, followed by the Senate, so now is the time to make your voice heard.
The Build Back Better legislation includes:
- An opportunity for immigration provisions that would create full inclusion for longtime community members and stability for local families and communities. This is critical to our country’s COVID recovery.
- Enhanced access to high-quality and affordable child care
- Investments in housing and rental assistance
- Four weeks of paid family and medical leave
- Extension of tax cuts that were passed in the American Rescue Plan, including the Child Tax Credit
- P.S. as of July 15, 2021, the Child Tax Credit provides unrestricted financial assistance to many individuals with children. Apply here.
- Increased access to nutrition assistance through the expansion of Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) for children and expansion of no-cost healthy school meals through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)
- Investments in maternal health care including 12-month postpartum coverage through Medicaid
- Extension of expanded Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance tax credits to lower health insurance costs and help many people who are uninsured access coverage
