More Nebraskans can Apply for SNAP with New Eligibility Criteria

Nebraska now processing applications with benefits to be disbursed at the end of July

Lincoln, NE —  In May, the Unicameral passed Legislative Bill (LB) 108 to address the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) “cliff effect.” The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services began processing applications for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) with the new eligibility criteria for the gross income limit this past week with benefits to be disbursed after July 26, 2021.

Nebraska Appleseed Economic Justice Program Manager Eric Savaiano issued the following statement:

“Far too many Nebraskans face obstacles instead of opportunities on their path out of poverty. After decades of community advocacy to eliminate the SNAP cliff effect, our neighbors will no longer have to choose between an increase in income and keeping food on the table.

With the increased eligibility limits, we encourage Nebraskans to apply or reapply for SNAP. Even as COVID-19 case numbers have gone down, food insecurity and economic hardship remain high. SNAP is available to everyone who qualifies!”

Nancy Williams, Co-Founder and President/CEO of No More Empty Pots, issued the following statement:

We are thankful that our neighbors now have another tool to help them leverage their strengths and talents as they work diligently to reach their full potential and recover from the pandemic. Eliminating the cliff effect will be the difference for many families balancing the fine line of just barely enough to get by and being food secure.

Nebraskans can contact the Food Bank’s SNAP Outreach Hotline to check their eligibility for SNAP benefits or apply at 855-444-5556.
