For everyone to have access to the good life, we must ensure that our tax system is equitable and works for all Nebraskans. We must also defend the funding of public systems that enable Nebraskans to meet their basic needs.
As the Nebraska Legislature heads into its third full week of special session, Appleseed continues to monitor and oppose any policy proposals that would impact Nebraskans’ abilities to make ends meet.
The Legislature adjourned early last week, and will resume today at 1:00 pm CT.
While things are changing quickly day-to-day, here’s what we know right now:
LB1’s tax increases to be amended into LB9
Through LB1, the Legislature is considering 70+ new taxes on everyday goods and services – such as any motor vehicle repair, hair care, veterinary services, and storage services – that will disproportionately impact hardworking, everyday Nebraskans – particularly individuals and families trying to survive on lower or fixed incomes.
Last week the Revenue Committee proposed to amend portions of the original LB1 into LB9. LB9, originally intended to address the school funding formula, will now become the main vehicle for the massive and unfair tax increases on Nebraskans.
Regardless of the bill number used, this proposal would unfairly shift the burden of taxation from the wealthiest people in our state to our lowest-income Nebraskans.
TAKE ACTION: Contact your senator and tell them to say NO to any tax proposal that includes massive tax increases on services that hardworking Nebraska families need and use daily.
LB2’s budget cuts still being considered
Last week, the Appropriations Committee also deliberated on the fate of LB2, which will result in millions of dollars being cut from DHHS funding. This endangers the stability of critical programs that Nebraskans rely on such as SNAP, Medicaid, childcare subsidies, and more.
At a time of ever-increasing food and child care prices, low paid Nebraskans should not bear the brunt of tax changes that benefit wealthy property owners. We cannot cut millions of dollars from the Department of Health and Human Services’ budget.
TAKE ACTION: Contact your senator and tell them to say NO to irresponsible budget cuts to programs that thousands of Nebraskans rely on to meet basic needs.
Thank you for standing up for justice and opportunity for ALL Nebraskans!
