Take Action on the future of Nebraska’s tax system

NE_Appleseed_Icons_TakeAction-128This week, you have a great chance to have your say in the discussion about the future of Nebraska’s tax system.

The Legislature’s Tax Modernization Committee will hold its final public hearings in Omaha and Lincoln this week, and they want to hear from you!

Thursday, October 17 – Omaha – Metro Community College, South Omaha Campus, 27th and Q Streets, 1:30 – 4:30 pm.

Friday, October 18 – Lincoln – State Capitol Building, Room 1113, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 pm

Our state’s tax system affects every Nebraska family, and changes in tax policy can have big implications especially to families that make low incomes.  We invite you to tell the Tax Modernization Committee that Nebraska needs a stable, responsible tax system.  One that preserves essential parts of The Good Life that Nebraska has spent decades building – things like top-notch schools, quality health care, and safe, thriving communities.

Appleseed is part of Rebuild Nebraska – a statewide group of stakeholders supporting Nebraska’s families, communities, businesses, schools, infrastructure, and workforce through a tax structure that is responsible, fair, and ensures adequate revenue to meet the state’s responsibilities.

Nebraska does not need a risky tax plan that is causing massive damage in other states and does nothing to create jobs, grow the economy, or protect families.  A large cut to the income tax, as some groups have proposed, will benefit only a few people with the highest incomes and actually could make people who earn the lowest incomes pay more in taxes.  It would destabilize our state budget and lead to more reliance on regressive forms of taxes.

This is a moment when your voice is crucial!  Tell the Tax Modernization Committee Nebraska needs a tax system that allows us to invest in things that do grow the economy and build a better future for all Nebraska families.

Your help with this effort will go a long way toward protecting and strengthening our state’s vital investments in education, health care and safe communities.
