Call to action

Stop the Senate’s harmful immigration proposal for families & communities

The U.S. must honor its values of welcoming families and people seeking safety. Instead, the Senate is proposing to trade away life-saving protections in current immigration and asylum law as part of other funding negotiations. These changes would create more chaos at the border, sending children, mothers, fathers, teachers and neighbors back to danger and even death, while also creating harm to local communities.

Currently the United States Senate is negotiating a bill that would make extreme, lasting changes to border and interior immigration policy – and they could vote as soon as this week.

This bill would harm families & communities by:
❌ Denying people the right to seek safety through asylum
❌ Creating more chaos, confusion, and harm at the border
❌ Allocating unprecedented funding for detention and jailing people for seeking safety
❌ Not allowing people to fully request safety before sending them back to danger & even death
❌ Separating families and harming neighbors nationwide

We demand Congress discuss real solutions:
✅ An asylum system that welcomes people fleeing dangerous situations
✅ Investments in knowledgeable organizations and local communities that are coordinating humane efforts to welcome people with dignity
✅ Positive immigration laws that create stability for long-time immigrant Nebraskans and local communities

The Senate could vote as soon as this week on this legislation, so use your voice now! Call both of your U.S. Senators today and tell them to honor our values of welcoming and protecting children and families seeking safety.

Children and families making the impossible decision to leave home in order to escape violence and seek safety need dignified and safe processes to do so. Nebraska has a long tradition of welcome, and Nebraska communities benefit greatly from new community members.
