Appleseed Statement on Senate health care vote

Senate vote is great risk to tens of thousands of Nebraskans’ health insurance

LINCOLN — This afternoon, the U.S. Senate voted to begin debate on a bill that could force tens of thousands of Nebraskans to lose their health coverage. Appleseed Deputy Health Care Director Molly McCleery issued the following statement in response to the vote:

“This vote is a sharp departure from the deliberative process that yielded the Affordable Care Act and opens the door to a variety of unscreened proposals, none of which will have gone through a transparent process, a committee hearing, congressional study, or received the input of health care stakeholders and experts,” McCleery said. “The result will be a combination of risky proposals, each of which likely endangers the health insurance of tens of thousands of Nebraskans.

“We are extremely disappointed that both Sen. Fischer and Sen. Sasse went along with this process and voted to place in jeopardy the health care of so many of their constituents. Every Nebraskan deserves quality, affordable health insurance that lets them get the care they need when they need it. But this vote very well could lead to poorer coverage and higher costs to tens of thousands of Nebraskans whose lives will be in danger if they are unable to get the treatments they need.”
