SNAP Reentry Bill Fails in the Legislature, but We’re Continuing the Fight

Earlier this week, the Nebraska Legislature failed to advance LB 121, the SNAP Reentry Bill.

This bill would have ended the lifetime ban on SNAP food benefits for Nebraskans convicted of certain drug felonies and reentering our communities. Current law specifically limits access to food for these folks, even after serving their sentence – essentially double punishing people for the same crime.

We’re deeply disappointed LB 121 did not pass. We’re also incredibly grateful for all of our neighbors who showed up. We saw Nebraskans show up by testifying, contacting their senators, and sharing their stories.

This work isn’t possible without the courageous storytelling from our advocates who have been directly impacted by this ban. Thank you to each and every one of you.

We would also like to thank Senator Hunt for introducing and prioritizing this legislation.

This fight is not over. We will continue to work alongside the thousands of Nebraskans affected by the counterproductive SNAP ban until all our neighbors are able to access the food they need.
