Graham-Cassidy threatens coverage for thousands of Nebraskans like Genevieve

Note: We’ve been overwhelmed by the number of Nebraskans who wanted to tell us how the health insurance protections of the Affordable Care Act have improved their lives. This is one of those stories.

Genevieve’s Story

Genevieve can now afford coverage that helps pay for diabetes treatments thanks to the ACA.

I am writing this as a Type 1 diabetic who works for Metropolitan Community College and Nebraska Writers Collective.

I have part-time jobs in education, attend graduate school, and pay my taxes. I have a healthcare plan through the Affordable Care Act that enables me, as a person with a pre-existing condition, to afford my insulin, without which I would die. My plan enables me to go to the doctor without fear of whether I will have to sacrifice paying another equally vital bill in the process.

Before the Affordable Care Act, I had a plan through my state’s high-risk pool that was increasingly unaffordable. Each year, I had to raise my deductible in order to be able to pay the exorbitant monthly premiums.

This meant that I paid for all my doctor visits out of pocket with only a small preferred-provider discount. I never met that high deductible, and I frequently resorted to credit cards to cover medical bills that I couldn’t afford.

My current plan through the Affordable Care Act enables me to meet that deductible much sooner, and my plan’s monthly premiums are affordable. This has changed my life. I no longer have to pick up many extra shifts at a bar just to pay the premium for a plan that barely even covered me.

I can now focus much more on being of service to the students of Omaha, Nebraska, thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

Take Action!

Call the offices of Nebraska’s U.S. Senators today and tell them they must vote “NO” on the Graham-Cassidy health care bill that will cause premiums to skyrocket for thousands of Nebraskans like Genevieve, remove protections for Nebraskans with preexisting conditions, and make enormous cuts to Medicaid.

Sen. Deb Fischer (202) 224-6551          Sen. Ben Sasse (202) 224-4224

Tell their staff how important the ACA’s protections are to you or someone you care about.

Vote NO on Graham/Cassidy bill. I’m a Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner and personally know people with pre-existing conditions who would lose their healthcare. This is an economic and financial issue. Improve ACA instead. Your party opposes it solely because Obama is black. I base this on what McConnell said after he was elected. I urge you not to destroy your personal reputation by voting for the bill. It will haunt you to your grave and beyond, IMHO. CAROLE DENTON.
