Staff spotlight: Welcome Andrew Farias, Weitz Fellow!

Andrew FariasAndrew Farias (he/him/his) is our new Weitz Fellow! He will be working closely with the Collective Impact Lincoln and Health Care Access team, as well as managing our volunteer program. His previous work with Carleton College includes implementing initiatives to divert waste from our college landfills, including beginning a campus-wide reusable to-go container program. Through this work with Carleton’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement, a student, faculty, and staff committee was formed to build relationships with Indigenous peoples and communities to implement the campus land acknowledgment.

Outside of Appleseed, Andrew serves as one of seven Program Directors with the Institute of Engagement, a collective that helps young people take responsible ownership of their Houston. Throughout this experience, Andrew has assisted in designing program curricula, planning workshops, and training fellows on facilitating conversations, time management, and community organizing. Check out Shift Press, the organization’s online publication that focuses on how young people build, influence, and experience power in Houston!

Fun fact: Andrew has a 10-year-old, toothless chihuahua named Spanky. If you ever see Andrew with Spanky around Lincoln, please give him pets! Reach out to Andrew at afarias@neappleseed.org.
