A few days ago, we saw a major step forward for immigration reform this year. On June 25, President Obama held a bipartisan meeting with Congressional leaders to talk about moving immigration reform as a top priority. This meeting demonstrated the momentum that has been building around the issue, including thousands of calls to the White House and Members of Congress and thousands of faxes to key Congressional offices leading up to the meeting. Just in Nebraska, a wide array of community leaders held two simultaneous press conferences on June 1 (the day groups across the country launched the Reform Immigration For America national campaign) as well as April and May meetings with our federal delegation; churches and faith leaders have offered prayers and vigils for a humane and workable system; and community members across the state are calling for a system that we can be proud of – one that upholds our values and allows us to move forward together.
