Summer Food Programs keep hungry kids fed year-round

As we get ready for Thanksgiving this week and our thoughts are turning to the upcoming holiday season, summer seems far away.

But it’s not too soon to imagine great possibilities for summer feeding programs for our kids, thanks to new funding from the Nebraska Department of Education Nutrition Services Division.

Many people are surprised to discover that 42 percent of children in Nebraska schools access the free and reduced-price lunch program.  In the summer, kids can’t access these meals.  Fortunately, nonprofits, school districts, and enrichment programs can help to fill the gap through the Summer Food Service Program.  The program provides federally funded meals to children in the summer, when school meals are not available.

Grant funds are now available to help communities begin or expand Summer Food Service Programs, and communities across the state can benefit!  Download the grant application here and learn more about how to solve hunger problems by reading our Summertime Mealtimes report.  Apply today and help feed kids this summer!
