Getting Out the Vote with New Nebraskans

It’s Election Day, and Nebraska Appleseed is celebrating with community leaders who have been helping to ensure that new American voters across the state had the voting process information they needed to fully participate in the democracy.

We worked with community leaders in six communities – Columbus, Crete, Grand Island, Lexington, Schuyler, and South Sioux City – to coordinate volunteer phone-banking and door-knocking to new American voters and Nebraska voters of color. Volunteers and mailings helped people find out how to vote early, vote by mail, or where their polling place was located. Altogether the leaders and volunteers reached out to nearly 7,000 Nebraskans.

“You could really hear people’s enthusiasm over the phone,” said Karen Gomez of Centro Hispano in Columbus. “They were really interested in the process and happy to get additional information. We helped answer questions about the process and some were really happy to find out they could vote by mail at home where they were comfortable: ‘Oh, I didn’t know that!’ they’d tell us.”

Remember, polls are open until 8 pm tonight. Help celebrate this core American value and right – everyone’s voice matters!
