Former Appleseed intern examines The Pursuit of Happyness


Last month, former Nebraska Appleseed intern Hung Vo, a current student at Lincoln High School, had a blog post published in HuffPost Teen, a teen-focused offshoot of The Huffington Post.

Hung took a look at the other side of the popular 2006 movie The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith – a classic rags-to-riches story of a man who lifted himself out of the depths of poverty through hard work and dogged determination.

However, Hung warns, it is important to not let the story in the movie legitimize poverty though oversimplified cause-and-effect.  The real forces that lead people into poverty and keep them there are often much more complex.
