Nebraska Attorney General continues to target valuable young Nebraskans and their families
DACA a successful measure of security until Congress updates immigration laws
LINCOLN — Monday, Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson attempted to justify his decision to join Nebraska onto a new lawsuit threatening to end the highly successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Nebraska Appleseed Immigrants & Communities Director Darcy Tromanhauser issued this statement Tuesday in response:
“There is no legal or moral justification to make Nebraska part of an effort to threaten hard-working young immigrant Nebraskans,” Tromanhauser said. “DACA is a commonsense, effective program that is lawful, constitutional, and consistent with decades of actions taken by presidents of both parties dating back to the 1950s. It has allowed more than 3,000 young Nebraskans to contribute to their home communities by going to school, starting careers, and raising families.
“The Attorney General’s decision is out of step with the strong, statewide support from Nebraska communities who have stood alongside Dreamers and their families time and again over the past several years. Nebraskans know that people who have grown up here and graduated from Nebraska schools should have the opportunity to contribute their skills and talents right here at home. Until Congress fixes our outdated and harmful immigration system, DACA is essential to ensure Nebraska communities across the state benefit from all that Dreamers can offer.”
