Nebraska Appleseed Statement on Congress’ tax bill
Bill endangers investments in health care, education, and other essential public systems
LINCOLN — Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Rebecca Gould issued the following statement in response to Congress passing a sweeping tax bill with large implications for public investments that benefit all Nebraskans.
“It’s clear the creators of this tax plan did not have hard-working families in mind. Almost all of the plan’s long-term benefits go to the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations, while letting the small aspects that benefit low-income and middle-class families expire. Many hard-working Nebraskans will see their taxes go up because of this bill.
“What is most alarming is this bill drastically increases the national deficit, which Congressional leaders already have said will lead to an attempt to slash investments in health care, food security, and other public systems that touch nearly every Nebraskan every day. Congress must not solve this budget crisis that they have created by making further cuts to essential investments that help hard-working people get ahead and have a real chance at meeting their families’ needs.”
