Introducing the Western Nebraska Better Breakfast Challenge

Nebraska Appleseed is proud to be working with the Safeway Foundation to increase participation in school breakfast programs in western Nebraska.

Nebraska has one of the lowest school breakfast participation rates in the nation, and we are working with partners to make improvements and provide incentives that encourage more schools to provide students with a healthy breakfast.

The Western Nebraska Better Breakfast Challenge is a competition between 16 elementary schools located in communities served by Safeway grocery stores. Each school that signs up for the challenge receives $200 to be used to make improvements to their current breakfast model.

The three schools that increase their breakfast participation the most by November will win cash prizes.

We are encouraging schools to try an alternative breakfast model such as Breakfast in the Classroom, Second Chance Breakfast, and Grab-and-Go Breakfast, or to take up a universal free option using Provision 2 or the Community Eligibility Provision. The three schools that increase their breakfast participation the most by November 2017 will win cash prizes that can be spent in any way that will benefit the students.

We are excited to assist schools in improving their breakfast program and look forward to seeing the how the changes impact the health and learning of the students!

Registration for the challenge ends May 15th and schools can sign up here. Contact Eric Savaiano at esavaiano@neappleseed.org for more information.
