You may have seen that over the weekend, a partial federal government shutdown started due to many concerns about funding harmful immigration enforcement tactics.
This is a partial shutdown that DOES NOT IMPACT SNAP BENEFITS.
Last year’s shutdown in October and November had huge impacts on SNAP, so we wanted to make sure this was clear. At least through September 2026, SNAP benefits are funded in Nebraska and the rest of the US.
If you were curious as to why there is a government shutdown this time, it’s because many members of Congress are demanding guardrails on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s violent, abusive and deadly operations as a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill. Congress already passed an unprecedented $75 billion of new funding for ICE in the big budget bill over the summer. If you’d like to join us in taking action against any additional ICE funding you can send a message to your members of Congress here.
Finally, the Nebraska legislative session is in full swing. Here are the food access bills we’re watching. Make sure you’re signedd up for our weekly Legislative Updatesfor opportunities to take action.
That’s it! Thanks for your advocacy and take care.
