Urge the Lincoln City Council to Restore Fair Pay for Lincoln Workers

This coming Monday, May 4, the Lincoln City Council will hold a public hearing on Councilmember James Michael Bowers’ proposal to ensure that Lincolnites are paid a fair wage by restoring the wage protections the state legislature recently removed.

We need to send a strong message to the Lincoln City Council: They must uphold the will of Lincoln voters, restore the critical wage protections we passed in 2022, and protect the right of Lincolnites to earn a fair wage by supporting this Ordinance. Please email or call your Lincoln City Councilmember today to make your voice heard.

Tell Congress the Farm Bill must strengthen SNAP

The House Agriculture Committee recently advanced its version of the Farm Bill (the Farm, Food & National Security Act) out of committee, and it is likely to go to the House floor for a vote soon. The House’s Farm Bill does nothing to restore food assistance to the 10,000 Nebraskans who have already lost their food assistance since H.R.1 (or the”One Big Beautiful Bill Act”) passed. H.R.1 made unprecedented changes to SNAP – changing how SNAP is funded, cutting $187 billion and stripping away eligibility from many. Now, the Senate is starting to write their version of the Farm Bill.

We need a Farm Bill that matches Nebraska’s values – a Farm Bill that gets food to the people who need it most and restores the loss in SNAP assistance for thousands of Nebraskans recently cut off. Call or edit the email template to the right and tell your Nebraska members of Congress to not advance any version of the Farm Bill that doesn’t strengthen SNAP!

We need policy change, NOT punishment – It’s time for positive immigration laws!

Recently Governor Jim Pillen announced that ICE plans to repurpose a facility in McCook, Nebraska, as a large-scale federal detainment camp to incarcerate up to 300 immigrant community members from Nebraska and surrounding states.

This is not who we are. Nebraska is a state that welcomes our neighbors and values the contributions of local moms, dads, coworkers, neighbors, and friends.

The country’s immigration laws have not been meaningfully updated in nearly 40 years. Call or email Nebraska’s members of Congress to tell them it’s time for positive, updated immigration laws that create stability for local families and communities.

ARE YOU DEALING WITH A SNAP OVERPAYMENT?

You’re not alone. SNAP benefits are supposed to reduce food insecurity for low-income Nebraskans, not increase their financial hardship. Unfortunately, we know that around 7,000 Nebraska households deal with a SNAP overpayment (approximately $6.5 million) every year, often through no fault of their own. You can share your experience regarding Nebraska SNAP overpayments with us at Nebraska Appleseed. If you choose to fill out this form, our team might reach out to you to discuss your SNAP overpayment experience further.

We also have additional information available on our SNAP Overpayments page.
