RELEASE: House Agriculture Committee Advances Farm Bill that Offers No Support for Nebraskans Struggling with Food Insecurity
LINCOLN, NE – Yesterday, the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee advanced a version of the Farm Bill, which is omnibus legislation that sets national policy on agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and forestry and generally must be renewed every 5 years. The last Farm Bill was in 2018.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has traditionally accounted for the largest share of spending in the Farm Bill, because Congress has acknowledged in the past that food assistance is a need for tens of millions Americans.
Eric Savaiano, Nebraska Appleseed’s Food and Nutrition Access Program Manager, issued the following statement in response:
“While the Farm Bill offers an opportunity to strengthen SNAP, this version does nothing to restore food assistance for the 10,000 Nebraskans who have already lost their benefits since H.R.1 (or the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”) passed. H.R.1 made historic changes to SNAP – changing how SNAP is funded, cutting $187 billion and taking away eligibility.
Additionally, unlike previous versions of the Farm Bill, this bill does not include the RESTORE Act, which would end the lifetime SNAP ban that prevents thousands of food insecure Nebraskans from participating in the program.
We need a Farm Bill that matches Nebraska’s values – a Farm Bill that gets food to the people who need it most. We need a Farm Bill that restores the loss in SNAP assistance for thousands of Nebraska. This flawed Farm Bill should not be advanced to the House floor or in the Senate.”
Nebraska Appleseed will continue to watch the development of this critical piece of legislation and call on our Nebraska members of Congress to pass a Farm Bill that does better to support Nebraskans struggling with food insecurity.
