Nebraska’s new minimum wage – and what we must do to protect it

Today, Nebraska’s minimum wage increased for workers across the state to $15.00/hour! Starting on January 1, 2027, our minimum wage will be adjusted every year to account for cost of living increases.

This increase is the direct result of years-long efforts by a coalition of organizations, leaders, and community advocates who worked tirelessly in support of Initiative 433, which was passed by 58% of Nebraska voters in 2022.

Ensuring that our minimum wage continues to go up as the price of food, housing, and other necessities increase is critical to ensuring that hardworking Nebraskans and their families can thrive.

As we look toward the 2026 Legislative Session, it’s crucial that we all come together to tell State Senators that every Nebraskan deserves fair pay that keeps up with the cost of living.

Last year, lawmakers debated LB258(Sen. Raybould), a bill that would have harmed workers by severely weakening Nebraska’s minimum wage law by carving out a subminimum wage for young workers AND artificially capping the cost of living increases that Nebraskans voted for.

The bill failed on Final Reading, but we expect this bill to return in 2026.

Nebraskans came together in 2022 to make sure that our state has a minimum wage that values our labor regardless of age AND ensures that wages do not once again fall behind the cost of living. And we’ll continue the fight to protect this voter-approved law in 2026.

Happy New Year, and thank you for being a part of this advocacy!
