Each year, when kids are let out of school for summer, we know that some kids can have less access to nourishing meals.
To make up for cafeterias being closed, Nebraska Summer Nutrition Programs (or SUN programs) are available to help families with kids get the food they need. Find options below to utilize or share with your network.
Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)
SFSP offers kids ages one to 18 free meals in high-needs locations that are supervised, safe, and welcoming. Over 300 sites sponsored by school districts, organizations, camps, or others serve SFSP meals in Nebraska. Also, some meals can now be served “to-go”! Grab and go, curbside, drive thru, walk up or delivery meal sites are more and more common each year.
Find active sites, including sit-down and “to-go”” sites, by texting “Food” or “SFSP” to 914-342-7744 or visit the USDA’s Meal for Kids site finder map.
Use Appleseed’s 1-Page SFSP Outreach Toolkit to help get the word out!
Summer EBT
Nebraska is participating in Summer EBT for Summer 2025! In fact, the first distribution was April 23! Eligible children will automatically receive an EBT card loaded with $120 ($40 per summer month) that families can use to purchase food at local retailers. Visit the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) Summer EBT webpage to learn more about eligibility, updating your address, card activation, how to apply and more.
Share DHHS’s Summer EBT Outreach materials or use Appleeseed’s SEBT outreach toolkit (including social media templates in English and Spanish) to help get the word out!
Watch our social media for additional outreach posts to share throughout the summer! Also, please let us know if you have questions and thank you for sharing.
