Legislative Update

At the Capitol: Minimum wage and paid sick leave protections challenged again

Thanks to amazing advocates like you – and lots of caffeine – we’ve made it to the final full week of the 2025 Legislative Session!

Today is Day 86 of our 90 day session. The Legislature is expected to wrap up this year’s activities no later than Monday, June 9th.

Multiple 2025 Appleseed Priority Bills are back on the floor TODAY:

Today, ✅ LB192 (Quick) is back up on Final Reading. This is a critical bill to pass this session to preserve access to food benefits for 10,000 Nebraska families.

➡️ Tell your senator to SUPPORT LB192 on Final Reading. (Find your senator.)

Yesterday, Senator Jane Raybould filed an amendment to add ❌ LB258, the bill to severely weaken Nebraska’s minimum wage law, to ❌ LB415 (Ballard), which removes paid sick leave protections from 140,000 hardworking Nebraskans and eliminates important protections. LB415 is up on Final Reading today.

We are frustrated with the Legislature’s continued attempts to undermine the will of Nebraska voters, who overwhelmingly supported raising the minimum wage and providing all workers with paid sick leave at the ballot.

Nebraskans want a minimum wage that values our labor – regardless of age – AND ensures that Nebraska wages do not once again fall behind cost of living increases. And NO Nebraskan should have to face the impossible choice of taking care of their health or missing a paycheck.

➡️ Tell your senator to OPPOSE LB415 and the LB258 amendment on Final Reading today.

LB89 (Kauth) is also up on Final Reading today. This bill would create definitions of “male” and “female” that K-12 schools and postsecondary institutions would be required to follow, and it would deny equal access to school activities for trans Nebraskans.

Trans Nebraskans deserve access to the same school activities and facilities as other Nebraskans. Denying them this access sends a clear message that they don’t belong, and will only harm their ability to thrive in the long-term.

➡️ Tell your senator to OPPOSE LB89 on Final Reading today.
