Legislative Update

At the Capitol: LB415 Up for Debate This Week

This week is the last week of hearings at the Legislature! Once hearings are over, the calendar will shift next week to all day debate.

Priority bills from senators and committees were finalized last week. In addition to those pieces of legislation, the Speaker is also allowed to designate 25 bills as priorities. You can view all priority bills here.

Our team is at the Capitol every day as we continue to fight for all Nebraskans! Last week, we testified on the following bills:

LB157, introduced by Senator Danielle Conrad, helps families fight the rising cost of living by adopting the Child Tax Credit Act (CTC), which would create a fully refundable tax credit of $1,000 per child age 6 or under.

LB189, introduced by Senator Machaela Cavanaugh, would support workers and help Nebraska businesses by creating the Nebraska Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Act (FMLA) for covered individuals dealing with serious health conditions or pregnancy, or to care for a new child, a family member, or a covered service member who is next of kin.

Nebraskans care about their community. We’re all working hard to take care of ourselves, our families, and our neighbors. That’s why nearly 75% of voters approved paid sick leave in November. Now, lawmakers want to add exemptions of who can earn and use it.

LB415 (Sen. Beau Ballard) includes a pending amendment ( AM545) that would exempt several groups of workers from receiving paid sick leave – including seasonal and temporary agricultural workers, and workers under the age of 16. Additionally, AM545 exempts businesses with 10 or fewer employees from having to provide paid sick leave, and it removes important protections for workers who face retaliation from their employers for using paid sick leave.

Debate on this bill and amendment will continue this week. Contact your senator and tell them to OPPOSE AM545 to LB415 to make sure they know this isn’t what we voted for. No Nebraskan should have to choose between their paycheck and their health or the health of a loved one.
