Earlier this spring, a number of us at Appleseed got to talking about how fortunate we’ve been these past fifteen years to work alongside so many great community volunteers who push for a more just and equitable Nebraska.
Many of our best community education and legislative efforts have succeeded in concert with grassroots volunteers all across our state – expanding low-income kids’ access to health care, stopping divisive immigration proposals and punitive welfare reform bills, and working together to create a child welfare system that effectively protects our most vulnerable children. These dedicated individuals have volunteered countless hours to create a stronger Nebraska, some of whom have done so in spite of sometimes adversarial and difficult circumstances.
So, our staff created the inaugural Roots of Justice Award to recognize Nebraska’s unsung grassroots heroes. We asked our supporters for their nominations and we received dozens of nominations. We are pleased to announce our community-nominated Roots of Justice Award honorees!
