Access to Justice
Core Values | Common Ground | Equal Justice
Access to the Legal System: Nebraska Appleseed promotes access to the civil legal system for low-income Nebraskans. We work closely with Legal Aid of Nebraska, the Nebraska State Bar Association's Volunteer Lawyers Project, and the Nebraska Supreme Court's Pro Se Committee to close the legal representation gap in Nebraska.
Minority Justice: Nebraska Appleseed Board Member Milo Mumgaard was honored in 2004 when named by the Nebraska Supreme Court to the Minority and Justice Task Force Implementation Committee. This committee is charged with the job of pushing for the reforms necessary to ensure all Nebraskans have equal access to the courts and identified by the Supreme Court’s task force on minority justice. These reforms include jury pools more reflective of their changing communities, increased number of interpreters and translators in court and assisting attorneys, and more information on legal rights provided to non-English speaking Nebraskans. Nebraska Appleseed Executive Director Becky Gould has been appointed to fill Milo's seat as part of the Task Force’s Access to Justice Sub-committee. Recently, law firms and Nebraska Appleseed signed a call to action to support diversity hiring.
